A different world: where do Hungarians earn the most and the least?
In the first quarter of 2025, the highest average gross salary was HUF 1.16 million in the second district of Budapest, while the lowest was just HUF 420,000 in the district of Cigándi. Bankmonitor.hu has analysed the evolution of domestic wage differentials based on the latest data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH).

According to the latest data, the Cigandi district still has the lowest gross salaries, with an average of HUF 420 400. This is followed by the Gönci district with an average wage of HUF 436 700, and then the Fehérgyarmat district with an average wage of HUF 443 500. These three districts show the worst situation in terms of salaries.
In contrast, the three districts with the best salaries all have an average gross salary of at least HUF 1 million. The highest earners are in District II with 1 159 600 forints, followed by District XII with an average of 1 128 900 forints, and then District V with an average of 1 052 800 forints.
If the districts of Budapest are excluded - as the economic strength of the capital and the level of wages would distort the comparison of rural districts - the districts with the best salaries are Budakeszi (HUF 957 200), Pilisvörösvár (HUF 857 900) and Dunakeszi (HUF 857 300).
Not all districts have been able to keep pace with the national wage increase. Two prominent examples are the districts of Paks and Dunaújváros, where average earnings have slipped by 10 percentage points when compared to the national average.
The region around Debrecen has been the most successful area in the country in terms of wage growth since 2019. Industrial development is the main reason behind the faster than national average wage growth in the districts of Hajdú-Bihar county.
